Q&A with Red Ant LORENA CERDA, PROGRESO HIGH JUNIOR GUARD

The Progreso Gazette caught up with Junior  Point Guard / Forward Lorena Cerda to ask her about the basketball season and her game. Here’s what she had to say in the Meet the Red Ants Q&A:

Q: Tell us when you knew you wanted to be a varsity basketball player, and why?

A: Ever since I was little It has always been a goal of mine to be a varsity basketball player. 

Q: What is your fondest memory of your experience on the team this season?

A: When me and my team connect on the court, for example,  when we played Zapata for a 2nd time after losing to them once, we came back and gained a victory. 

Q: How excited are you about being a member of the basketball team?

A: Very.

Q: What did you do this summer to improve your game to get ready for this season?                              

A: I played with Dr.Elite (a trainer in Donna) and I gained a lot of skill and worked on my shot throughout the whole summer. 

Q: Who has influenced your play style the most?

A: My mom played when she was younger, and she always has a lot of feedback to give me after my game. I take her feedback and try to implement it in my games.

Q: Who ís your favorite professional basketball player?

A: DEFINITELY LeBron James, we play the same position,  and I love his playing style. He is very diverse when it comes to shooting 3s all the way to dunking.

Q: Who ís the greatest basketball player of all time?

A: Kobe is the greatest of all time in my opinion. He changed the attitude and the dynamics of the game.

Q: What drew you to play basketball over other sports?

A: When I was younger my mom put me in boys and girls club basketball and it has always sparked an interest. Ever since then I have done leagues and started playing on my middle school basketball team.  

Q: What aspect of your game comes easy to you?

A: Offensive Concepts. I usually never feel lost or confused on where I’m supposed to be on offense. 

Q: What advice has the coach given you that you wíll always remember?

A: That my mentality is the biggest part of my game. 

Q: If you could play any basketball player 1v1 who would it be?

A: My mom

Q: Is there a particular significance to your jersey number?

A: My brother and sister played with the number 4, so that is why it is so important to me. 

Q: What is the worst practice you have ever endured?

A: I haven’t encountered a bad practice this season.

Q: What tips would you give to someone going out for basketball?

A: Stay calm especially in a tough competition team, just play YOUR game. 

Q: What team is considered your biggest rival, and why?

A: Rio Hondo and Lyford because they are the top teams in the district.

Q: What is your most memorable shot?

A: My Sophomore year against Santa Rosa I hit a big 3 . It was actually my very first in-game 3. And it changed my range in the game. 

Q: What is your favorite game day hype song?

A: Rich Flex by Drake

Q: Who would you pick as your all time greatest starting five?                                                              A: LeBron James, Steph Curry, Jokic, Kobe, and Giannis. But if you’re asking as a team, I definitely think my starting team right now.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: PANDA EXPRESS, but I also enjoy my mom’s fideo. 

Q: What is your favorite classroom subject?

A: I have started to grow interest in Biology. 

Q: Who is your favorite college basketball team?

A: Texas
