The Lady Red Ants picked up a 40-51 win against the Lady Mavericks on the road at Weslaco IDEA Pike.
By halftime the Sophia Pecina and company were holding on to a 16-24 lead.
Next up for the Lady Red Ants is a match at home on January 2, with a noon tip-off against Rio Hondo’s Lady Bobcats.
“The girls played good today,” said Adolfo Hinojosa, Lady Red Ants head coach. “They played good defense and we were trying to stress shooting and we hit some open shots.”
After the break against the Lady Mavericks, the Lady Red Ants continued to pressure the home team with their defense and offensive attack.
“We did really good on rebounding and our free throws,” Hinojosa said.”I’m very proud of these girls.”
The Lady Red Ants put up 10 points in the first quarter, 14 in the second, 11 in the third and 16 in the fourth quarter.
To mount their winning drive in the second half, Alexa Pecina sunk a contested three point shot. Sophia finished multiple drives to the hoop, and Cerda finished down low, in transition and from downtown.
Sophia Pecina lead all scorers with 23 points for the Lady Red Ants.
Lorena Cerda dropped in 19 points for the Red Ants.
Alexa Pecina hit six, connecting from downtown in the second half.
Genissis Contreras added three points of her own from outside the arc.
Alexa Galvan scored one from the free-throw line to help lift the team.
